Now for switching OS's.. you will find its easier to switch from PC -> mac then the other way around.. first of all you dont have to worrie with any type of DOS prompts (b/c everyone knows that windows still runs on DOS in he background) and even though mac OSX runs on Unix in the background... you rarely have to use any unix commands (i think i have only once....
I'm looking at doing up another tutorial video for my Windows XP site, this one covering compatibility mode. I've had a few leads so far so all hope is not lost yet.
However if somebody knows of a game or any piece of software that won't run under XP SP2 without compatibility mode, but will when using compatibility mode please drop it in a comment. Requiring to be installed using compatibility mode is also a plus....
Well last Friday (or was it Thursday?) I went ahead and ordered the Toshiba Portege M200 from Laptops Direct, I was feeling a bit iffy buying it from a place I had never previously heard of, but they had the cheapest price and offered a no-dead pixel guarantee for an extra fee.
On Monday they called me (good stuff!) up to inform me that the product was being discontinued, d'oh ran threw my mind....
WinCustomize has up a top 10 list of what the next generation version of Windows needs. A lot of it is really stupid.
1) New display system. This is what Avalon is supposed to address. The new display system needs to let us always run our systems as the maximum resolution our monitor supports and have the DPI (dots per inch) be fluidly scalable without impacting software compatibility. I shouldn't have to run my laptop at 1024x768 in order to be able to read text if it supports 1600x1200....
Saw this over on Channel 9.
What the hell? We know we're using Sun Java, we had to manually install it since Java no longer ships with Windows, you've wasted millions of Windows users' time already, now you're wasting who knows how many millions of seconds by forcing us to close your own stupid pop-up ads in the system tray.
I've since removed Sun Java from all my systems.
Just written up a bit of a news round up on the Xbox 2.
Xbox 360? Back nearly a year ago, a list of potential candidate names was unveiled for the Xbox 2, on this list contained Xbox 360, now considered by many the final retail name for the next generation Xbox. The reason being to better compete. Xbox 2 sounds older then PlayStation 3 - therefore if they bump it up to 360, it sounds more cutting-edge and more modern....
Back two or three years ago I was a solid Mozilla browser user. Mainly for the built in popup blocker and Java script controls, when Firebird (forerunner to Firefox) emerged I switched over to using that since I didn't need Mozilla's mail/news client etc.
However when Microsoft released Service Pack 2, I switched back to IE, I much prefer the way IE renders pages, it's much nicer to have everything sized out first then rendered than having things chucked around the screen like Netscape based browsers....
Last month Demon, my ISP, introduced a new 1Mbps product range. HomeOffice 1000, priced at only £1 more then I'm currently paying for 500Kbps. Good deal if you ask me.
Within a week I fax of a upgrade form. I wait 3 weeks hear nothing. Get onto them last night only to find out that the upgrade was put onto their system - but removed 2 days later. Phone them up today only to find out that 'Demon Express' cannot be upgraded to HomeOffice 1000, despite the fact that Demon Express Total (the newer product that is identical to Demon Express) can be....
I've come across another of theses adverts for DAB radio, claiming that it's "crystal clear CD quality sound", more like muddy shite MPEG-2 garbage. How the hell can they get away with advertising it as CD quality?
Most stations in the UK are broadcast @ 128kbps in MPEG-2 (hardly a decent codec). The truth of the matter is that old FM sounds better, I actually did some tests today. Digital Radio in the UK sounds worse then FM....
My mate Chapstick had a bit of a run in with an iPod Mini lately, he did a pretty decent entry in his blog about it. I certainly enjoyed reading it.
Two points I've got to make, I'll skip the obvious ones about iTunes trying to take over your computer, installing god knows what and having it all running in the background - I went into more detail about them in my why the iPod sucks entry from a few months back....
